Liverpool outfit JOEYS stamp their mark with new single, 'LOVE IN DOSES'. A track that highlights the bands versatility and dizzying potential.
Liverpool has been a breeding ground for talented musicians since the days of The Beatles, Gerry and the Pacemakers, with some of the most iconic artists coming from the patch over the years. Recently, there has been an influx of bands from the city making waves across the UK music scene, igniting its claim to be the best place for new musical talent in the country.
One of those are indie newcomers JOEYS, a trio consisting of vocalist Kieran, drummer Jonny and guitarist Greg. Having received support from BBC Introducing, Radio XS and even mentioned by actor and director Rob Carlyle, it only takes 30 seconds listening to their music to see why they’re a band in demand.
With a distinctive identity, it’s safe to say that JOEYS are one of Liverpool’s most exciting and compelling outfits. With their latest single 'LOVE IN DOSES', we are treated to a whisky-soaked, raspy voice from frontman Kieran that’s reminiscent of a certain Paulo Nutini. I’m not one to regularly compare fresh talent with recognised artists who have had significant success, but I find it necessary in this case.
'LOVE IN DOSES' is built on catchy lyricism and an eclectic, nurtured sound that caught me off guard. With a maturity to the tracks overall composition that is evident throughout, its melodic tones and steady rhythm veers away from the
often chaotic take on indie many new bands adopt.
Focusing instead on its alternate, dreamy collective progression as the song transpires, it’s rare to see this approach from such a new band. It’s no surprise that JOEYS have already received great attention from those looking for the next Kooks, Franz Ferdinand, or even Stone Roses. Centring on the breakup of a close relationship 'LOVE IN DOSES' is a dreamy single that evokes images of spring days and better times ahead.
Avoiding the typical formulae we expect from a band at this stage in their development, the track is an enjoyable, cohesive groove that’s fun backing vocal chants are a joyful end to the 4-minute-long track, an addition that will leave most of us tapping our feet at the bare minimum.
I look forward to seeing where JOEYS decide to take their music from here, with the band working hard in the studio. With a slot at FESTEVOL on the 26th March and another announcement on the way, they have plenty in the pipeline for fans to look forward to. An unexpected delight that I’m very happy I came across, JOEYS are on an exciting trajectory that could see them influence the indie scene dramatically. Check the track out now below!
